Waffles and the Wildcoast

Had a lovely weekend break (6-9 Oct) at Ramsgate down the south coast of KZN. We stayed at the Crayfish Inn, which is a little terracotta-coloured block of apartments, looking onto the Ramsgate Lagoon.

Travel website about the Crayfish Inn

Unfortunately I was sick with a cold for most of Saturday, and the weather was wet and windy, but inbetween the sniffles, it was a wonderful holiday!

We drove down after work on Friday, found the place and then proceeded to search the town for some tasty takeaway. We ended up with some Debonairs pizza from Margate, after much deliberation given the huge choice of restaurants and takeout venues. They have it all down there!!!

Saturday morning looked like it was going to be a lovely sunny day, so I was persuaded to put on some shorts, and we headed across the bridge to the Waffle House for breakfast. This was definitely a good choice, although by the time we had got halfway across the bridge, the sky had clouded over and a cool wind had begun to blow. The Waffle House serves every kind of waffle you can imagine, from your standard sweet waffles with syrup and cream or ice cream to ones with chocolate mousse or mixed berries, main courses with curry, salad or chicken a la king topping, and delicious "Breakfast Waffles" served with egg and tomato. These breakfast waffles were absolutely delicious, and are made with ham and other ingredients chopped into the waffle mix! The restaurant itself is built on the edge of the estaury, overlooking reeds full of birds, and looking out onto the lagoon and the sea beyond the sand berm at the river mouth. Music at breakfast was haunting recorder pieces from a man playing in the forest. A walkway led from the Waffle house to the beach between the trees. We walked through and along the beach home to excercise off the food, but gave up once the wind really started to blow.

As part of the weekend deal, we were given a voucher for the Crayfish Inn Restaurant, so Saturday evening I brightened myself up and we went for supper there. The food was delicious! Since it was a seafood restaurant, I decided I better at least try a little, so I had a fillet steak topped with a creamy sauce, two prawns and two mussels. Dave had ribs, but that's just because he is deprived of real meat in the UK due to the prices!!

Sunday we took a drive further down the coast and to please my gran, we paid a visit to the Wild Coast Sun. The Casino complex was cool and green, but not particularly impressive. So instead of gambling, we took a drive through the golf course and down to the beach. We then sat on the sand for a while soaking up the sun, drinking a Bacardi Cranberry Breezer (Not bad, but I still prefer Brutal Fruit) and watching kids play on the sand and in the lagoon. Fabulous. A perfect end to a relaxing weekend. After that it was only a quick lunch of cream cheese and chips on bread, munched in a parking lot, before we drove home back to our families.
